THE OPPOSITE OF HATE SPEECH IS NOT TOLERANCE IT IS FREEDOM OF SPEECH
THE OPPOSITE OF HATE SPEECH IS NOT TOLERANCE IT IS FREEDOM OF SPEECH
BY Domenick J. Maglio PhD., Traditional Realist
Liberals are sophisticated intellectuals who were not supposed to hate anyone. Instead, they are supposed to be tolerant of people who do not think, act or believe like them. In this liberal phase they were champions of free speech. This tolerance phase radically changed as liberals morphed into progressives.
Times have changed. These progressives have become the dominant force in government, education, social/mainstream media, entertainment and all other institutions. They are clearly in charge of the direction of our society over whelming conservative traditionalists at every turn.
As the progressive power has grown, they have steadily become more brazen in demonstrating their true colors. The ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) is no longer pretending to fight for free speech for everyone only for progressive ideals. The ACLU has announced that they are shifting their mission towards advancing ‘Racial Justice’ policies, including reparations. The ACLU has refused to defend the speech of conservatives, which has been openly censored in the news and social media. They have not expressed a critical word about the concept of hate speech and the undisguised censorship of the cancel culture. Their silence during the obvious attack on our Bill of Rights is deafening.
All of the original Ten Amendments are considered by progressives as negative rights as they prohibit the government from making laws that violate these rights. According to the Founders, these rights are endowed by God to ensure the people’s freedom. It is the people’s protection against government tyranny of shutting down the voice of the people.
By the progressives inserting the concept of “hate speech,” the Constitution and our freedom of speech is being violated. Anyone who commits the crime of uttering undefined words or concepts has the possibility of losing their right to speak. The exact moment of crossing into the arena of hate speech is not defined. Any journalist can state that a person committed “hate speech” but because they cannot repeat publicly what they said, no one knows what the other person actually said, but only what someone claimed was hate speech. Unfortunately, the person accused has no recourse but to accept this hideous label and consequences without the ability to speak up. This is un-American.
We have traveled down a dangerous path from the height of crisp and open debate to tolerating hate speech. Our First Amendment is the foundation and spirit of the other Nine Amendments we had bestowed upon us. Censoring another’s speech on any level is against everything that has insured America’s freedom and greatness. The right of freedom of speech is the cornerstone of all U.S. freedoms. Our citizens are supposed to have the right to debate ideas to sharpen their ideas and grasp of issues to make better decisions.
American citizens and people all over the world, have always considered free speech as an integral part of the American experience. We all have said outrageous things to get a laugh or to underscore the absurdity of an opposing point of view. Many comedians have exited their profession because of hate speech. Once we frighten enough citizens through ridicule or canceling their means of survival, we will readily witness the end of all the rest of the Bill of Rights. Our pride will be gone from announcing that we are citizens of the United States.
U.S. citizens need each other to stay free. We are being consciously divided into groups to weaken our confidence and power. Once carved up into opposing camps we are all weakened by our superficial differences and not united by our nation’s great historical accomplishments.
When we all start to understand and love the diversity of our nation we will come together to tolerate and finally learn to respect our different points of view. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson did this in their waning years after years of disagreeing to become an example of what people can do to overcome their differences. Through this process of sharing ideas, we can reignite our love of America’s enthusiasm and vigor as a nation.
The undefined accusations of hate speech is a poison that must be removed from our cultural acceptance and acknowledged as the destructive force that it is. We can no longer be tolerant of progressives attempting to censor free speech. The process of weaponizing speech by renaming it “hate speech” will dead end into a totalitarian state. Without We-The-People uniting and speaking up, our reign as the greatest and most prosperous nation in the history of mankind will come to an abrupt end. Hate speech is just any speech they do not like.
We can only win the civil battle between progressives who want dictatorial power and the traditionalists if we stand firmly behind America’s moral values, especially the freedom of speech.
