THE IMPORTANCE OF NATIONAL STABILITY IS CURRENTLY ON DISPLAY

THE IMPORTANCE OF NATIONAL STABILITY IS CURRENTLY ON DISPLAY
By Domenick J. Maglio PhD. Traditional Realist

One of the greatest virtues of the United States has been its stability. Our founders understood that everything changes with time, nothing stays consistent. Over reaction or under reaction will determine the severity of any change. The inability to know the future caused our wise forefathers to slow down our decision-making and include debate to determine the best decision. They realized that any radical shift in our course could capsize the ship. This would lead to unmitigated disaster of over-reacting that might not be salvageable. They believed in “steady as you go” to avoid grievous mistakes of one’s own making.

This is the reason these wisemen after all their historical research of ancient civilizations found that democracies in the long run were destined to fail. People generally overreact from fear, fickleness and being short sighted. They want everything they had in the past without considering the consequences.

For this human shortcoming these men of reason decided on a representative government with separation of powers. That would slow down the process and force a consensus of competing groups of society to agree to a better decision. Our form of government has allowed US citizens to live in a culture and economic society of predictability and security. There is a built-in tacking as found in sailing that never encourages a radical change in direction. It causes a high level of “steady as it goes” from one administration to another. Irrational changes and revolutions as seen in a democracy are constrained in a constitutional republic.

In a crisis like our current experience with Coronavirus there are many voices heard expressing different routes to alleviate the issue. One day we are social distancing, then we should not wear masks, then we should. A level-headed strategy will hopefully continue to stabilize until this crisis eases and calm is restored. Steady as you go will keep the boat from tipping over until we are on solid ground.

The United States ratcheted up testing, surpassing every other nation in the world. As the number of people tested increases so do the number of people who tested positive for the virus. This increasing number of people who tested positive was reported as an alarming occurrence. The panic increased even when the predictions turned out to be too high. It appears we will have fewer deaths than last year’s flu of 61,000. The inaccurate scientific models have constantly been lowered from 2.2 million deaths indicating the predictions were never credible.

The crucial number is the number of deaths. This is what created the panic in the first place. The death total has been a fraction of what had initially been forecast. It has included all the deaths due to multiple health complications, while the death rate from other causes has dropped.

The death forecast has been a moving target due to different models with different assumptions. As Dr. Fauci said, on March 31st, after lowering the estimates many times that there could be 100,000 to 200,000 Covid-19 deaths in total. Then he quickly added that he did not want to be held to that number. This arrogant scientific priest dictatorially stated, “we won’t end the quarantine until there are no more deaths from the virus.” Drastic speculative change leads to more uncertainty that fans the flames of greater panic. Citizens are being conditioned to follow “speculative scientific mandates” without presenting hard factual evidence. Many experts are questioning the effectiveness of social distancing. It has never been scientifically proven to be effective. We are supposed to follow it on faith although scientific experts reject evolving promising treatments because they have not been “thoroughly tested.” This double standard is undermining scientific credibility while increasing legitimate questions rather than quelling them.

The elites’ tendency to use a crisis to enlarge government and limit citizen’s freedom appears to be a serious motivator of this pandemic. Our civil rights should only be temporarily forfeited for public health concerns. Instability is a time when elites like to make dramatic changes to limit our freedoms and gain greater control. We must remain vigilant and brave not to let this happen.

America’s constitution has guided our decision-making, keeping us stable and on course. Many elites are urging we surrender our civil rights for public health. Dramatic pseudo-scientific predictions, no matter how piously presented, should not determine our decisions. Constitutional rights should not be permanently eliminated on such flimsy speculation. We need to remain calm, thoughtful and consider everything we need to keep for a balanced society.

Our national hallmark of “steady as it goes” needs to continue to guide us on the economic and health front.
