LOW STANDARDS AND EXPECTATIONS CHEAT CHILDREN

LOW STANDARDS AND EXPECTATIONS CHEAT CHILDREN
By Domenick J. Maglio PhD. Traditional Realist

Most Americans realize giving everyone a trophy or certificate of excellence for participating in an event is patently absurd. Everyone cannot be equal in a performance. Ranking in dancing, skating, most valuable player or other contests has a large dose of subjectivity but there are obvious differences between contestants. The best and worst performers can easily be discerned although the best of the participants can be more controversial.

Competition usually brings out the best in a contestant; they try harder, concentrate more and increase their effort. In academics the drive to be number one in a penmanship, geography or spelling bee, artistic contest or any other competition normally improves the performance. The negative or even positive criticism may not be easy to accept but it opens the person to flaws in their presentation. It raises the standards and expectations for individual students.

Failure is essential to becoming a winner. Losing a contest in any area forces a person to analyze what they need to do for a better performance. It drives the individual to breakdown their performance into specific segments in order to improve their overall effort. Understanding the need to put forth the effort to do one’s best to move up in ranking becomes self-evident. Being ranked behind the other contestants in an event they need to make changes in their methods and strategy to gain the positive results.

As in any organization instead of working hard to improve some students spend their energy and time to keep others from striving to do better because it will reflect on their poor effort. Currently in school some students are negatively called “a try hard.” This is supposed to shame a child into being more like the low functioning students to keep expectations and standards down. “A try hard” earns his grades by honestly putting more effort into his studies. These students raise the standards and expectations of everyone in the class.

On the other hand, when parents or teachers lower expectations for the performance of an individual to protect him from disappointment it is a death sentence for his motivation. It says whatever you do is good enough, which is a direct pathway to mediocrity or worse.

Having few or no standards and expectations for children taking on traditional simple responsibility is even more devastating. Without learning how to complete more responsibilities competently as they become of adult age, the individual will develop limited abilities, skills and poor habits for maturing into a full functioning adult. These youngsters will be disabled when doing the things adults will expect them to do. The fewer simple independence skills they possess, the harder it will be for them to complete more intricate ones that are essential for them to be considered a functional adult.

The longer the parents attempt to protect the child from emotional pain of not doing an adequate job which does not measure up to others, the more the youngster will shy away from challenges. The competencies will not develop normally and the confidence will shrink. No pain, no gain does not refer only to body builders but to all aspects of a person’s development. Any emotional or social pain stimulates self-awareness of the individual’s personal reaction to critical or nasty remarks by others. It might temporarily trigger anger or depression in the child. When the individual realizes the nasty remarks were a reflection of the inadequacy or even self-loathing of the person who made the statements rather than an accurate assessment of him, he is better able to ignore or joke about the negative comment. This inoculates the person from “put downs” making him more able to handle situations like this.

Empathy for others comes not from wallowing in problematic circumstances but by overcoming them. Resolving formidable obstacles to achieve success motivates these strivers to realize their dreams. These doers do not allow themselves to blame past events or others for their lack of achievement. Since these individuals fought through their problems, they know persistence is the key to resolving difficult issues.

Low expectations make for a weak and eventually an angry unfulfilled character.  It is hard for a person who has given little effort to better his circumstances to admit to himself that he is his own worst enemy for being stuck as a loser.

Only through persistent hard work can a youngster learn that they hold the key for their own success. Parents and other significant persons in the child’s life can encourage and even insist the youngster do the assignments again to reach a level of excellence. Keeping standards and expectations low or non-existent is a pathetic and mean act for the child’s future. Once the child adopts high standards and expectations for himself, he is on a path towards a successful life.

BULLYING DEFINITION HAS EXPANDED INTO MEANINGLESSNESS

BULLYING DEFINITION HAS EXPANDED INTO MEANINGLESSNESS
By Domenick J. Maglio PhD. Traditional Realist

Cambridge Dictionary: bullying- to threaten to hurt someone, often frightening that person into doing something they do not want to do.
Often the use of one’s size, brute force or an offensive object was used to physically intimidate. The common solution was to stand up to the aggressor or inform an authority figure to punish the person. Any show of strength or gumption more than likely would result in the bully finding a weaker character to be his victim. The idea was to show strength of character and you would not be a victim.

Currently the definition of bullying has expanded to all sorts of feeling nuisance.
When a person gets a message online saying they are stupid or fat from a person they know or do not know, the receiver of the message feels offended. It could be as meaningless as a negative description. You are short, ugly, tall, skinny, stupid and as silly as a pink elephant, whatever the person feels is “bullying.” The old saying “sticks and stones will break my bones but names will never harm me” has practically disappeared from children’s culture.

Now it is if anything “hurts your sensitive feelings” it is a form of bullying. Using this subjective self-feeling means the definition has weakened our youth. A child calling another child “worthless” becomes a federal case to many. The parent of the offended believes they have the right and obligation to step into the middle of the incident and force the other child to apologize for harming their child’s feelings.  In today’s world the so-called “victimized” child does not learn how to appropriately fight back with words to stop the annoying situation or strength of character to just ignore it.

The parent’s, usually the mother’s, attempt at micromanaging are creating a disabled, pathetic wimp, Instead of encouraging their child to stand up to foul mouthed youngsters, they teach their child to run home, moaning to get their parents to handle the affairs with their peers.

This wimpifying of our children has resulted in some parents directly bullying other parent’s young children without consulting them first. The protective parents have become bullies in their own right to someone else’s child and miss an opportunity to teach their child the benefits of standing up for oneself.

The morphing of the bullying definition from physical intimidation to subjective feelings has broadened the definition to be meaningless. Many children now expect their parents to solve any emotional difficulties. Children are not expected to choose their friends carefully. They are no longer expected to stop playing and associating with people causing them problems.  Shrugging off stupid, nasty statements from others does not usually happen as the child’s feelings are too precious to suffer pain from name-calling. In other words, being tough and growing up to make better decisions about the people you pick as friends is no longer the child’s responsibility. Only by learning from one’s mistakes can an individual inoculate himself from repeating the same negative experience with their associates. When so called “friends” continually hurt a child, they are not friends. The person who says horrible things about you should simply be “unfriended.” They cannot be bullying you if the person cannot contact you because you blocked them on your social media.

Many of these uncomfortable interactions are voluntary. A person has to decide if the people and places they frequent are a negative or positive influence for them. When the negatives outweigh the positives it would be in the person’s best interest to choose someone else or somewhere else to go. Everyone is free and able to cut off a relationship when it is offensive.

Calling someone a bully should be reserved for serious acts of intimidation. If a person is stalking someone in school or the neighborhood and there is no way to avoid it, this should be reported to the proper authorities. These people, teachers, ministers or police have the responsibility to prevent this type of behavior and protect the youngster from harm.

A parent directly confronting another’s child is unacceptable. It could lead to charges of child abuse. Moreover, it is a terrible thing to deny their own child the opportunity to handle his own affairs. In fact, the parent should train their child in order to survive when they are no longer there. A child should not be considered to be fragile. When parents teach and encourage the child to stand up rather than be victims they will not use the bullying excuse to have others fight their battles for them.

Expanding the definition of bullying to include almost anything is destructive to the child, the parent, family and society.  We are developing fragile personalities who do not have the strength to deal with the common challenges life hands us.

LIVING IN ONE’S BUBBLE IS DESTRUCTIVE
By Domenick J. Maglio PhD. Traditional Realist

Too many people have realized in our politically correct world, it is easier to burrow into a hole rather than come out and confront our divisive nation. We are constantly warned by the media experts that voicing your own political viewpoint or cultural preferences in social gatherings, even in front of one’s family might cause arguments and hostilities that could end the relationship. This has resulted in many people turning to like-minded others on the anonymous Internet. This pattern of seeking out only people who have our own values and perceptions is very dangerous for the wellbeing of the individual and the nation.

This shunning of different ideas leads to group think propaganda, divisiveness and retards one’s thinking acuity. This has been the case for too many years. The progressive establishment media has had a monopoly on the mass media for over a half century.

When a person is constantly reinforced with one message it is easy to accept it with no discomfort.  A well reasoned counter way of viewing the issue could trigger new understanding and doubt about the previously believed idea. The more nonsense statements that are repeated without discussion and questioning, the greater the chance it will be adopted as a “cultural truth or fact.”

Anyone who dissents from a majority opinion would be seen as a social outcast or deviant. As the minority counter culture approaches the traditional one, instability surfaces dividing the country into polar opposite realities. This not only motivates people to choose sides to be accepted by a group but shuts out opposing ideas that might stimulate an individual’s analytical powers to make better choices in the future.

Group Think creates a form of stability at the cost of balance and personal growth. The political elites dictate the acceptable values and ways of thinking. Slogans and sanctioned behaviors are stressed to conform to encourage the current cultural direction. The anti conformist traditionalists are ridiculed and prosecuted for protesting the present politically correct mandates.

Instead of a small oligarchy group determining the direction of the country, the USA has historically promoted the culture to be shaped from the bottom, up not the top down. The Bill of Rights has insured the people’s right to free speech including free press and the right to assembly. This translates into saying whatever you believe can be said to anyone without being punished by the law or public opinion.

Political correctness is a totalitarian technique to shut down open thoughts and speech. It has been used by repressive communist nations and throughout history by conquerors and kings to control their subjects. It is the opposite of the wishes of the founders of our nation. It is the opposite of encouraging self reliant, independent thinking individuals who have propelled our nation to greatness.

To keep the United States the leader of the free world, citizens need to get out of their Facebook, Internet games, selfie bubbles and become more involved with the real world around them. They should learn from actual interaction around them not from phony narratives people create about themselves to appear what they want to be not who they actually are. The real consequences of individual actions and their judgment by others teaches those who happen to be around them the good and bad results of going down certain paths. Being “non judgmental is an integral element of political correctness.

This same open-eyed assessment of cultural and political directives and actions are essential in keeping our leaders from straying from the path of righteousness. Without the people voicing their opinions, elites will subtly create a gradually introduced self-censorship for the people. This self-censorship will enhance and maintain power for them.

The people’s voice frightens the establishment about the possibility of losing their power. This wakes them up curbing their appetite of domination by making them realize they are not perpetual American kings or dictators: the ruling class. Without the safeguards of aware citizens protesting their antics we will become slaves to an all controlling and brutal existence. Our liberty would end.

It behooves each of us to do our duty and to come out of our comfort zone regardless of the aggravation and annoyance it causes us. Americans have too much to lose to selfishly withdraw from significant political debates.

Living in one’s bubble does nothing to educate the person to maintain the nation as a free constitutional republic.
